Socialist International Council to discuss centenary of the Armenian Genocide

On December 11-12, 2014 the Socialist International Council meeting convened in Geneva, under the main theme of ‘International peace and security: the resolution of conflicts and countering terrorism’. The meeting was opened with addresses delivered by Michael Møller, UNOG Director General, António Guterres, UN High Commissioner for Refugees, SI President George Papandreou, and SI Secretary General Luis Ayala. ARF-Dashnaktsutyun Bureau member and Socialist International vice-president Mario Nalpantian attended the meeting (he also attended the meeting of the SI presidium).

In his closing remarks, SI President George Papandreou said: “A large number of parliaments around the world have voted a Declaration recognizing the Armenian Genocide. The SI Council has decided to put this issue on the Agenda of the next Council in 2015, 100 years after this tragedy.”
